The two-day overdose investigations course is designed for law enforcement professionals who are looking to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges involved in responding to and investigating drug-related overdoses. Overdose deaths are becoming an increasingly pressing issue in many communities, and the successful prosecution of those responsible can be an important tool in combating the opioid epidemic. However, investigating these cases can be a complex and difficult task, requiring specialized knowledge and skills.

The course will cover the entire process of investigating an overdose death, from the initial patrol response to the final prosecution. Through a combination of lectures and interactive exercises, participants will learn about the various challenges involved in investigating these cases, as well as best practices and strategies for overcoming these challenges. They will also have the opportunity to learn from an expert investigator who has extensive experience working on these cases, and who can provide valuable insights and guidance.

About Your Instructor

 

 

Sergeant John Mocello has been a law enforcement officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia since 2007. Prior to that, Sergeant Mocello was a staff member at one of Virginia’s regional criminal justice training academies developing an online training program and teaching a variety of courses. Sergeant Mocello earned a Bachelor of Science degree from James Madison University where he double majored in Sociology and Media Arts & Design with a concentration in digital media/digital video.

Sergeant Mocello has served in many roles, including patrol officer, field training officer, detective, FBI Safe Streets Task Force Officer, and Detective Sergeant supervising general assignment investigations.  Currently, Sergeant Mocello serves as the Detective Sergeant supervising the Special Investigations Unit for the Leesburg, VA Police Department with a primary focus on investigations involving narcotics, gang, and street crime offenses.

Sergeant Mocello is a seasoned investigator and leader with experience spanning all types of investigations to include crimes against persons, narcotics, sex crimes, juvenile crimes, and human trafficking. Throughout his career, Sergeant Mocello has identified and investigated criminal organizations at the local, national, and international levels. Sergeant Mocello has experience presenting to local, state, and federal partners on various topics including homicide investigations, overdose investigations, gang investigations, and report writing.
